Navigating the Pandemic Year: A Hecatean Journey
TALK & CEREMONY
The pandemic emerged as a serious situation on the eve of a priestess training day dedicated to Hecate that we held in London. It was the day the shops were being stripped of loo paper, and hand sanitiser in a silent doomy frenzy. The Hecate day by contrast was uplifting and deeply moving, although we were all fully aware that it marked the entrance to an un-charted and uncertain time ahead. Hecate has been with us since then, shining her lamp in the underworld through the death of loved ones, funerals unattended, old friends in comas, on respirators; anxiety over elderly relatives who we have been distanced from.
At the same time, many faced mental health challenges as they battled with fear and anxiety about the future, uncertain as to whether they could trust those in authority. Via the many platforms of the media we have seen an outpouring of information, some truthful and some illusory, that have caused us to question our perception of the truth.
Hecate has always been there whirring away in the background, and in our magic. We’ll be looking at how Hecate has held the lamp in the underworld and what she has shown us as the year creaked through the plague-times. Which keys will she hand us, as we emerge into the light?
Through ceremony, we shall meet Hecate at the crossroads and choose which path to follow as this new chapter in our lives unfolds. As we emerge from the darkness of the underworld, she will illuminate our way ahead with her flaming torches.
About Caroline Wise & Carrie Kirkpatrick
Caroline Wise’s introduction to Hecate was during the night of the October 1987 hurricane, when there was little available to read on Hecate, and no internet. Her personal understanding of Hecate has been unfolding since. Caroline has
