The Third Hekate Symposium!
The Hekate Symposium is now in its third year, and this year we have decided to explore ‘different perspectives’ on the Goddess Hekate. Hekate is a Goddess like no other – she has been feared, hated and loved through the centuries. She evokes strong feelings and emotions, and the diverse experiences and ways in which she continues to be viewed provides a fascinating and beautiful window into Her mysteries.

10:30 – Hekate in Magic since the Middle Ages by David Rankine
Hekate’s prominence in the magic of the ancient world is well known, but until recently less attention has been paid to her role as a faerie queen, in the grimoires and in the development of ceremonial magic since the late 19th century. From Shakespeare to Crowley, from necromancy to witchcraft, this lecture will be a journey through Hekate’s influence and depiction in Britain during the last 500 years, exploring the survival and evolution of her relationship with those who continued to seek her at the crossroads, in the graveyard and under the light and dark of the moon.
David Rankine is an occult researcher and practising magician who has authored more than 25 books and whose work has featured in dozens of anthologies, magazines and journals since the 1980’s. He is the co-author of Hekate Liminal Rites, contributed to Hekate Her Sacred Fires and to Hekate Keys to the Crossroads. He is probably best known as one of the leading scholars researching European magical texts, including the Key of Solomon, Goetia, grimoire of Pope Honorius and many others. His own experiences with the Goddess Hekate goes ‘way back’ and in addition to sharing his research with us in this talk, he will also be touching on some of his personal experiences.
11:30- The Ecstatic Ritual of Hekate & Dionysos by Vikki Bramshaw
In both ancient and modern mystery traditions, the state of ecstasy – ritual frenzy and trance – has been central to the overall success of ritual, and the techniques or ‘keys’ to ecstasy are pivotal to achieving union with the gods and performing effective magic. But why is this, and what makes deities such as Dionysos and Hekate such successful ecstatic deities? In this talk we discuss the ecstatic origins of both Hekate and Dionysos, how they are connected, the techniques that have been used to invoke their presence, and their involvement in the realms of magic.
Vikki Bramshaw is an author specialising in pre-Christian religion and esoteric traditions. Some of her passions are religious history, theurgy, initiatory rites, and trance. She is the author of DIONYSOS: Exciter to Frenzy pubished by Avalonia in 2013. Her first book, ‘Craft of the Wise: A Practical Guide’ was published with John Hunt Publishing in 2009. Her work was also published in Hekate Her Sacred Fires (2010), VS: Thou Art That – That Thou Art (2011). Vikki presented a lecture at the Hekate Symposium 2012, and is a regular speaker at esoteric events.

Additionally she will discuss the various ways that Hecate has come through to her to help her to help others whilst giving readings on TV, how Hecate provided a mediumnistic link in a spiritualist church, and how she regularly helps others through transformation, guiding them when they are at the crossroads.

3:45 – Hecate, a Witchcraft Perspective talk by Melissa Harrington
Hecate has always been a Goddess who is easily associated with Witches and Witchcraft. She stands at the cross roads of life and death, misunderstood, feared, loved, always respected and always remembered. She remained present in myth and literature even when Pagan religion was but a memory, and now is returning to our consciousness. Like the witch she has worn the dark cloak of mystery while bearing the torch that guides her followers into illumination, like a witch she cannot be lightly dismissed. Today Melissa Harrington talks about Hecate as a Witches’ Goddess, how she has been perceived and honoured, and how working with her is part of much wider movement in human consciousness. While looking at the psychological and sociological impact of the return of the Great Goddess, Melissa will also share some of her personal experiences wherein Hecate has manifested as a physical presence of great joy, strength, insight and even initiation.
Fascinated by magic, myth and classical religion since childhood Melissa Harrington has been an initiated witch for the last 25 years, which has led her on an interesting life journey. It led to initiation into several ceremonial mystery schools including the OTO, and undertaking a psychology degree followed by a PhD in Theology and Religious studies. She now lectures in psychology and researches the psychology and sociology of religion. She is very interested in the interface between academic and practitioner perspectives on magic and Paganism, the mechanisms and effects of ritual gnosis, and in the lived experience of devotional and practical magic.
